Blackbird Guide (Windows Privacy Tool) – Safe Setup, Switches & Recovery
This manual explains how to use Blackbird safely on Windows, what it changes, common side effects, and how to recover if something breaks. If you’re looking for the program itself, use the dedicated program page:
Blackbird Download Page (RebootTools)
Blackbird is a one-time run privacy tool: it applies changes and exits. It does not install background services. Internet access is only needed when resolving hosts for optional network blocking.
⚠️ Important: Blackbird performs deep Windows configuration changes. Before applying anything, create a restore point and/or full backup. If you want a “reversible first step”, consider lighter tools first (see the related tools section below).

1) Where to Download Blackbird
Blackbird is published on its own program page on RebootTools (kept separate from this guide):
https://reboottools.com/programs/blackbird/
This separation is intentional: the program page focuses on download and versioning, while this manual focuses on safe usage, known limitations, and recovery steps.
2) Before You Run Blackbird (Safety Checklist)
- Create a restore point or full system backup.
- Note your current Windows behavior: VPN, Windows Update, notifications, Store apps.
- Run as Administrator (required for most changes).
- Prefer the built-in backup option inside Blackbird before applying tweaks.
If your goal is “reduce telemetry with minimal risk”, you may first try a more controlled tweak layer like Winaero Tweaker or Optimizer. Blackbird is best when you want a stronger, deeper privacy change set.
3) Preface (How Blackbird Works)
Blackbird is a one-time run tool designed to disable Windows telemetry, ads, and data collection. It does not install services or run in the background. Internet access is only required when resolving hosts for network blocking.
4) Known Bugs & Limitations
- Windows Server and Insider builds are not officially supported
- LAN/VPN issues possible — often fixable using the
Loption in the main menu - Task View / Virtual Desktops may crash due to disabled services
- Notifications and some Device Settings may not appear on certain Windows 10 setups
- OneDrive re-enabling may require additional steps depending on what was disabled
- Legacy 32-bit environments may have limitations
Rule of thumb: If you depend on Microsoft cloud features (OneDrive, Store apps, tight Windows Update policies), use Blackbird carefully and always keep a recovery path.
5) What Blackbird Does (Practical Summary)
Blackbird can apply changes across multiple privacy-related areas:
- Disables telemetry collectors, diagnostic reporting, and tracking services
- Reduces ads and “suggested content” behavior
- Restricts or disables Cortana, Bing integration, and certain cloud features
- Optional host blocking of known tracking endpoints (IPv4/IPv6, supports custom lists)
- Includes optional modules such as App Manager and Spy Task Destroyer (advanced)
If you also want a clean-up step after privacy tweaks, pair Blackbird with a safer maintenance utility like BleachBit for junk cleanup, or use System Informer to inspect processes and startup behavior.
6) Using Blackbird (Recommended Menu Mode)
- Download Blackbird from the program page.
- Run
blackbird.exeas Administrator. - Back up current settings (press B).
- Press any other key to apply tweaks.
- Reboot when prompted.
You can also use HOSTS.TXT and UPDATES.TXT for custom blocking logic. Keep custom lists conservative to avoid breaking login flows, app updates, or Microsoft services.
7) Command-line Switches (Advanced)
Blackbird supports many CLI switches. Examples:
blackbird -scan→ Full privacy scanblackbird -app→ App Manager (block/unblock system apps)blackbird -std→ Spy Task Destroyerblackbird -bak→ Backup current settingsblackbird -r→ Recovery mode (restore changes)blackbird -o→ Enable/disable OneDriveblackbird -u→ Control Windows Updatesblackbird -d→ Disable/enable Defender
Full list is available in the README or by running blackbird -?. If you’re not sure which switch does what, stick to menu mode and backups.
8) Spy Task Destroyer (STD)
STD is used to force-remove stubborn Windows telemetry tasks. Use it only if you understand the impact. If you want a safer “tuning first” approach, start with Sophia Script / SophiApp or Optimizer, then move to Blackbird if you need stronger changes.
9) App Manager
App Manager lets you block or unblock built-in Windows apps more safely than manual scripting. This is useful if you want to reduce background apps but avoid breaking core Windows functionality.
10) Common Issues & Fixes
- LAN/VPN problems: try the
Loption in the main menu to restore connectivity. - Windows Update issues: if you disabled updates via Blackbird, re-enable using recovery mode or the relevant switch.
- Notifications missing: some privacy service changes can affect notification components. Restore selectively if needed.
- OneDrive not working: depending on what was disabled, you may need to re-enable OneDrive options and reboot.
If you are troubleshooting a broken Windows component, tools like DISM can be helpful for system health and repair scenarios. For full “cleanup & repair” workflows, see our Tron Script Guide (use carefully and read the guide fully before running).
11) FAQ
Where can I download Blackbird?
Use the program page on RebootTools: /programs/blackbird/
Is Blackbird free?
Yes. Blackbird is freeware supported by user donations.
Why does antivirus sometimes flag Blackbird?
Privacy tools can trigger false positives because they modify system settings, services, tasks, and networking behavior.
How do I revert changes?
Use recovery mode (R) and/or restore from the backup you created before applying tweaks.
What if I want a lighter privacy tool first?
Start with Winaero Tweaker, Optimizer, or Privacy.sexy.
